CHAPTER TWENTY

“Lose the hardware and you won’t get hurt. Slowly.” The muffled voice sounded familiar.

“Tom?” Despite the risk, Spencer turned his head and yanked down his sun buff, exposing his face.

“Spencer?” Tom dropped his Space Age–looking Kriss Vector 9mm, letting it dangle from a sling, and reached out with both hands to grab Spencer by his shoulders. “I can’t believe it.” He let out a chuckle and wrapped his arms around Spencer as if he were his long-lost son.

The greeting caught Spencer off guard, and he almost lost his footing in the slippery gray mud on the ground. He was happy to see the man and learn that he was fine, but he hadn’t traveled hundreds of miles through treacherous conditions to see his future father-in-law. “Where’s Kate?”

Tom finished his brief embrace with a couple of slaps on Spencer’s back. “She’s inside with Debbie. Come on.”

Spencer’s face broke into a wide, aching smile, the crust of grime cracking over his skin. Relief surged through him, overpowering the exhaustion that had settled deep into his bones. After all the relentless miles, every close call, every moment he’d doubted he’d make it, she was alive. A mix of joy and disbelief flooded his chest, tightening his throat as he tried to take it all in.

Tom turned and headed toward the front door faster than Spencer had ever seen him move. But he didn’t turn to go inside. Instead, he continued on past the formal entryway around to the side of the house, checking back several times to make sure Spencer was still behind him. Tom was acting like a kid on Christmas morning. Spencer hadn’t expected a reception like this, at least not from Kate’s typically serious father.

“So, you holding up all right? You look pretty banged up.” Tom glanced back again as they navigated a slippery walkway through a jungle of ash-covered tropical plants.

“Yeah, I’m doing all right.” Spencer grabbed a nearby branch to maintain his footing around the back corner of the house. “Is this place on the water?” He looked toward the rear of the property. The lawn dropped off, but he couldn’t see much past that.

“Sort of, but not deep enough to get your boat in here. I’m assuming you sailed up on Restless.”

Spencer wasn’t prepared for the wave of emotions that crashed over him at the mention of his beloved sailboat. The loss still cut deep, like a knife twisting in his gut, a painful reminder of what he’d left behind.

“It’s a long story,” was all he could manage as a reply.

“Well, I’m sure you’ll fill us in on the details when we’re all together.” Tom glanced back with a nod as he held open the damaged screen door leading into the two-story lanai.

“Whose place is this? A friend of yours?” Spencer’s eyes scanned the pool, its once-clear surface now clouded with soot and ash. He could almost imagine the gurgles and splashes from the waterfall as it trickled over the ornate rocks, though now it barely held on to its former beauty.
